Today’s second-instance decision of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, is shameful, primarily for the European Union, because the so-called BiH judiciary has long lost credibility and only the completely naive treat it as a structure that independently decides on any important issue.
For years and decades, messages have been coming from Brussels to BiH about the importance of the rule of law, in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path towards the European Union.
However, in all pivotal situations, and especially the current one, with the so-called “verdict,” it turns out that such attitudes are a notorious farce and mockery.
Because, how can the rhetoric about a “legal state,” “the independence and impartiality of the judiciary,” and similar nonsense be considered even remotely convincing, if in 2025, three decades after the war in BiH, the EU supports the possibility of an unelected foreigner imposing laws in this country, and for the so-called courts and prosecutor’s offices to try to enforce them.
In this way, the EU will not improve the situation in BiH even an inch, but will make the already complex and sensitive inter-ethnic relations even more toxic.

And not only that – by supporting absurd “verdicts,” the European Union is mocking its own principles, because it is showing, through the example of BiH, that they do not apply to a region that Brussels allegedly wants to see as an EU member.
“The rule of law,” in the Brussels-sponsored version intended for BiH, is obviously just an empty slogan without any meaning or content, and theorists have yet to agree on an adequate, clunky name for the ugly face of such paradoxical phrases.
“The verdict is binding and must be respected,” is how Brussels’ current Pontius Pilate-like washing of hands from the dark processes they are pushing BiH into sounds. However, if they could have learned anything about this region in the past decades, it is that it is an area where the saying “Nothing is a must, only death is a must” applies.
And if the categories of “must” are already being considered, it makes much more sense to reconsider the so-called path of BiH to the EU. Because Brussels constantly says one thing and does another, and the so-called verdict is only the culmination of that absurd process. It is time to take note of this chronic discrepancy between words and deeds and to stop running towards a hypocritical “club” that does everything to reject you.
