“The diaspora wants to return in large numbers. I left for studies, and my goal is to return. If the protests continue, if the students continue to be persistent and brave – I see myself back in Serbia. We export knowledge, and that is a big problem. All the economists, professors, all the people who have left – they are the pillar of a nation. The problem is that our pillar is outside the borders,” Srdan Vlahović, a student pursuing his academic education in Italy, told N1.

He emphasized that “if we were to bring those people back and seize the momentum of change – our country would experience great improvement.”

“We are trying to actively help the students in Serbia who have been bravely fighting for the fifth month for this country to finally get on the right track. Serbia is in our hearts every day – stronger and stronger every day because of the students. Awareness is rising that Serbia can get on the right track. We are actively fighting for it, we follow the news,” he said.

He stated that he believes our students and people feel their support.

“Regarding Italy, the protests are very current news, I can say that articles appear in local newspapers – where I am in Venice, an article about it comes out once a week. Gatherings are happening, Italians are following it, it has also been on RAI television,” he added.

He emphasized that it has been shown in the diaspora that “they want to hear (about the situation in Serbia).”

“We have great support from abroad regarding the people. Politically, the picture is a bit different, but work is being done on that as well. Our Assembly in the Diaspora, as an informal organization – we have compiled letters that our diaspora members can sign and which we actively send to foreign politicians and institutions,” explained Vlahović.

He stated that the Assembly in the Diaspora has more than a thousand signatories and that it originated from the idea of raising awareness about the students in the diaspora as well.
