Angelina Topić won the silver medal in the high jump at the World Championships in Torun.
This is the second consecutive major competition at which she has won a medal, having previously claimed bronze at the World Outdoor Championships in Tokyo.
We witnessed an incredible competition, and Angelina delivered four perfect jumps to clear 1.99m. Three other athletes achieved the same result – world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh, her compatriot Yuliya Levchenko, and Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers.
At 2.01, Mahuchikh cleared the bar on her first attempt and won the gold medal, while Topić, Levchenko, and Olyslagers failed all three attempts and therefore shared the silver medal.
The 20-year-old Angelina came closest on her second attempt, when she knocked the bar down with her legs.
This is the seventh medal for Serbia at the World Indoor Championships, and the second silver. Four were won by Ivana Španović, and one each by Dragan Perić and Dragutin Topić.
Ahead of the World Indoor Championships, Angelina Topić stated that she was excited and arriving at the competition in excellent form.
“I recently finally reached a moment that I think we have all been waiting for a long time – the bar stayed at ‘two’. I don’t think I could ask for a better indicator of good form. This is definitely the best season of my career so far, and I will give my all to continue in this direction. When everything goes according to plan and when I feel physically and mentally ready for a good performance, I would say that excitement is a much closer word. With great anticipation and desire for a good result, a sense of pressure is inevitable, but I think I already have enough experience to deal with it and use it in the best possible way in competition. I am extremely ambitious and excited to enter the fight for medals at the World Championships, and I hope for great heights, which I have confirmed several times over the past two months that I am ready for,” said Angelina Topić.
