Serbian athlete Elzan Bibić (26) is the winner of the Belgrade Half Marathon, which this year was held on a new course, with the entire route located in New Belgrade. In addition to being faster than all other participants, the Serbian runner managed to set a new national record!
Bibić completed the race in 1:01:47, improving by as much as 24 seconds the record held since 1998 by Janko Benša. This is just one of many national records Elzan Bibić has set during his career, in which he has confirmed that he is the greatest Serbian middle-distance runner of all time.
Currently, Elzan Bibić holds Serbia’s records in the 1,500 meters, 2,000 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, and 21 kilometers, and he also owns several national records achieved in mountain races. There is no doubt that in the coming period Bibić will attempt to break the national record in the 10-kilometer event, which the legendary Dane Korica set back at the European Championships in 1971. Practically, this is the only record not held by Bibić in all disciplines in which he competes.
This year, Bibić faced his toughest competition from Kenyan runners. Second place went to Victor Kemboi (1:02:09) of Kenya, while third through the finish line was his compatriot Caleb Alhamis (1:02:21).
Valentin Jebet of Kenya is the winner of the women’s half marathon. She recorded a time of 1:11:00 and broke the course record in the women’s category.
