At the prestigious NEM Zagreb conference, held from December 9 to 12, 2024, as part of the competition for the best pre-production project in the feature film category, Belgrade screenwriter Selena Stanković won the NEM Award for her script “Mileva: Frau Einstein”.

The awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, December 11.

In her script, Stanković explored the life of Mileva Marić Einstein. Always mentioned in the context of the life of her husband, the great scientist Albert Einstein, Mileva herself has often been unfairly overlooked and neglected in history. This project comes at a time when 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Mileva Marić Einstein’s birth, further contributing to the significance and timeliness of her life story.

“This project has been and remains very important to me. In many ways, Mileva Marić Einstein was a woman ahead of her time, who faced challenges and choices that still shape women’s lives today. I wanted to tell a somewhat familiar story, this time from her perspective, and finally present her as a bright, strong, somewhat stubborn and defiant girl, and not as someone who loved and inspired Albert, and supposedly hindered and restrained him.

Mileva often fails in her struggle, sometimes it’s her fault, sometimes it’s the environment’s, but it’s important that she doesn’t give up trying to find a place where she truly belongs, between family and science. Of course, there is a special focus on her (un)fulfilled scientific potential and the question of her possible contribution to some of Albert’s most significant works,” said Stanković.

The NEM (New Europe Market) conference is held annually in Dubrovnik and Zagreb and brings together professionals from the film, television, and media industries (producers, screenwriters, distributors, etc.), providing NEM with a platform for networking, discussions, presentations, and the development of new projects.
