PATIENT IN BELGIUM, DOCTOR IN BELGRADE: The first robotic telesurgery operation performed in Serbia!

The first robotically-assisted telesurgery operation in our region was performed today at the Clinical Centre of Serbia (KCS), in which the patient was located in a hospital in Belgium, and the surgeon leading the intervention – in Belgrade.

Thanks to telemedicine, a patient in Belgium with prostate cancer was operated on from Belgrade by Professor Alex Mottrie, founder of the famous ORSI Academy, a globally recognized center for education in the field of minimally invasive and robotically-assisted surgery.

Prior to the operation, Professor Mottrie held a lecture at the Clinical Centre of Serbia for domestic doctors, who also followed the operation live.

Before the operation, Professor Mottrie stated that they have been performing robotic surgeries for almost 25 years.

“I have performed 8,000 such interventions so far, and I am very proud to be in Belgrade today, from where I will perform the first robotic operation in this region on a patient who is in Belgium,” he said.

He explained that a robotic operation means that, via a special surgical console, surgeons control robotic instruments located in the patient’s abdomen from a distance.

“That allows us to maneuver much more precisely. For years we did this next to the patients, and now, thanks to 4G and WiFi network capabilities, we can do it from a distance. Today, from Belgrade specifically, I am operating on a patient who is 1,800 kilometers away,” he said.

When asked what robotic surgery from a distance brings, he points out that it provides greater accessibility for patients around the world.

“Also, we will be able to help young colleagues from a distance, and our vision is to start a training center from Belgrade, which will be connected to my training center in Belgium, so that we have the same methods all over the world. I was here in June, I am impressed by the quality of the profession I saw in Serbia and I think it is the right moment to move to the next level and introduce robotic surgery to Serbia and the region,” he concluded.
