They sold their skin dearly, but they could do nothing in the third, decisive set.

Aleksandra Krunić and Anna Danilina achieved a great result by reaching the women’s doubles final at Roland Garros, but they couldn’t go further than that. The Serbian-Kazakhstani duo sold their skin dearly in the fight for the trophy, but the Italian combination of Jasmine Paolini – Sara Errani was relentless and shifted into fifth gear when the third, decisive set began – 1:2 (4:6, 6:2, 1:6).

Less than a year ago, Errani and Paolini became Olympic champions at the same venue, and Philippe Chatrier Court proved lucky for them once again. In two hours and 16 minutes, the second seeds were defeated by the girls who orchestrated the most pleasant surprise of this year’s Roland Garros.

A great battle was fought in the first set; there was no break until the sixth game, when the Italians broke Krunić and Danilina’s serve, who, however, immediately broke back. Paolini and Errani pressed again; the Serb and the Kazakh resisted in the eighth game, but not in the tenth, when a new break was made to win the first set.

Krunić, with her doubles partner, rallied and authoritatively, with two breaks, leveled the sets, but the third was a one-way street. The Italians allowed their opponents only one game.

Krunić missed the opportunity to become part of the list of Serbian and Yugoslav tennis players who have won the trophy in Paris.
