The Academic Plenum announced that the arrest of three University of Novi Sad professors in less than 24 hours is considered naked repression and retaliation by the authorities for supporting student demands.

“Two colleagues, who were ushers at yesterday’s blockades of Novi Sad assemblies, were detained on charges of disturbing public order and peace. One of the colleagues was summoned yesterday as a witness, but after more than two hours of giving testimony, he became an accused because he defended citizens at the blockade when they were attacked by a thug. The other colleague was detained this morning, although even he is unclear why,” the Academic Plenum announced.

The dean of the Faculty of Medicine was also detained this morning, the statement adds, and tabloids immediately reported that it was due to higher salaries paid at the faculty.

According to citizens from the citizens’ assemblies, professors Miloš Jocić from the Faculty of Philosophy and Veroljub Naumović, an assistant at the Academy of Arts, have been detained. The reasons are still unknown.

The two of them were also ushers during the blockade of intersections by citizens’ assemblies, as well as professors of the Free University.

“We believe that this moment for her detention was not chosen by chance, because the only faculty on strike at the University of Novi Sad is precisely the Faculty of Medicine, and the dean has supported the students’ demands from the beginning,” the statement said.

The Academic Plenum assesses that all arrests by the authorities are aimed at intimidating university professors, as well as all rebellious citizens of Serbia. However, “we are sure that this will not scare the professors, but will only further strengthen their support for the justified demands of the students,” the statement concludes.
