What a sensation in the opening round of Group H! Spain and Cape Verde played out a goalless draw – 0:0.
One of the tournament’s biggest favorites failed to defeat the underdogs, who defended heroically and managed to keep a clean sheet thanks to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Vozinha.
Many expected the Spaniards to cruise to first place in Group H, which also features Cape Verde, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. However, as the saying goes, everyone plays football these days.
The Serbian national team experienced that firsthand when they faced Cape Verde in a World Cup warm-up match and suffered a 3:0 defeat.
Spain spent the first 40 minutes of the opening half looking sluggish, but then launched a fierce attack in the final five minutes before the break. Marc Cucurella created two perfect opportunities for Ferran Torres, who first struck the crossbar from a position where it seemed harder to miss, and then Mikel Oyarzabal failed to capitalize on the rebound, with goalkeeper Vozinha making a brilliant save.
The Spaniards continued to push in the second half, especially after Lamine Yamal came off the bench in the 71st minute and immediately helped create a chance, but substitute Mikel Merino was unable to convert it.
Cape Verde continued to defend superbly and even threatened on several counterattacks late in the match, although they were unable to find the back of the net.
Even so, they have already produced a major upset, and there is no doubt that they have significantly complicated the situation in Group H.
