Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has announced that she will run for mayor of Chicago.

During her appearance on the ChicagoLIVE show on Monday, Pappas was asked whether she was considering joining the growing number of potential candidates. Her reaction left little room for doubt.

“I’m entering the race,” she said. “And I’m not dropping out. I just haven’t officially announced it yet.”

When asked whether this was essentially an announcement of her candidacy, Pappas confirmed — saying that the city needs a “gray-haired grandmother who has the courage to set everything straight.”

She emphasized that Chicago needs someone who can “bring everyone to the same table” and make tough decisions so that “this train can get back on the right track, because it has completely derailed.” Pappas pointed to her long-standing work as treasurer and stated that she is “ready for the challenge” and “ready to move forward.”

Maria Pappas has served as Cook County Treasurer since 1998 and is one of the longest-serving elected officials in the county. Her announcement places her among several high-profile names considering a run against Mayor Brandon Johnson in the upcoming election.
