Marija Vasić from Užice, a student at the Faculty of Pedagogy in Užice, always dreamed of learning Spanish – and that very desire proved fateful. Through a friend, she met Federico Vargas from Mexico, and their daily online conversations quickly grew into a deeper connection. Long talks first turned into a sincere friendship, and then into true love.
“I fell deeply in love with him even when we were just talking. We were best friends first, and somehow it evolved from friendship to what we have today,” Marija Vasić recalled for RINA.
Two years later, Federico made a life-changing decision – he would come to Serbia to meet the girl he had never seen in person, but for whom he felt something special.
“When I was at the airport and saw Marija, that minute… that was it. She is my love. I saw her and I knew – I want to live here, I want her to be my wife,” said Federico, who was stepping onto Serbian soil for the first time.
Their love story continued in Novi Sad, where they soon began living together. A year later, Federico proposed to Marija in Paris, and they subsequently had both a civil and church wedding. Today, Marija works as a teacher, and Federico as an engineer. Although the change was huge, Federico quickly fell in love with Serbia.

“The sense of security here amazed me, as well as the truly kind people. Serbia is now my true home, because I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else but in Serbia with my Marija. From now on, I’m only going to Mexico for vacations. Everyone has accepted me; it wasn’t easy at the very beginning because there are differences in the way of life, but now everything is great. My parents often visit, and I try my best to learn Serbian,” says Federico.
Marija’s family also welcomed him with open arms, although, she says, the beginning wasn’t simple. Today, they speak Spanish at home, but Federico is constantly improving his Serbian.
“At first it was a little unusual, but once they got to know him, now they love him more than me. There were also some charming differences – we take off our shoes when we enter the house, but that’s not customary for them,” Marija added with a smile.
They described each other in three words – with a lot of emotion. “Empathetic, patient, and brave – for deciding to come,” Marija said, while Federico added with a smile: “My knowledge of Serbian doesn’t have that many words, but I can say – loving, beautiful, and generous.”
They plan to build a house in Novi Sad and start a family, and perhaps one day his parents from Mexico will join them. Marija and Federico’s story once again proves that when love is true, no distance is an obstacle.
