Legend has it… If a groundhog at the crack of dawn on February 2nd, Groundhog Day, sees its shadow and retreats back into its burrow, winter and cold weather will last at least six more weeks. If it doesn’t see its shadow, spring is expected to arrive earlier.
The tradition of celebrating Groundhog Day was brought to America by German immigrants a few hundred years ago, who believed that groundhogs, besides nibbling chocolates, also had meteorological skills. There’s even a statistic claiming groundhogs predict correctly about 60% of the time—roughly as reliable as betting on Nikola Jokić’s Denver Nuggets winning a game.
Following this story, our team traveled to the town of Woodstock, Illinois, about an hour and a half drive from Chicago. Woodstock is famous for the 1993 movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, and every year hosts a traditional event featuring the main star: Woodstock Willie the groundhog, whose weather predictions many trust more than meteorologists.
Watch what Willie predicted and see what we recorded on-site, where a few thousand people had gathered from literally all over the U.S., as well as from distant Australia and Canada—and, believe it or not, we even met two Serbs!
