A real drama unfolded on Friday at a beach in Greece, when a girl from Macedonia suffered a cardiac arrest. The silver lining was that a medical technician from Serbia happened to be on the same beach to provide first aid, after which the child was successfully hospitalized.
How he felt at that moment, what was going through his mind, is revealed by the hero of this story himself – Saša Kostić:
“The place is Nea Vrasna in Greece. I was in the shallows with my son when I suddenly saw parents carrying out a girl, about four years old, unconscious. I immediately realized it was something serious, so I approached. A colleague, Dr. Duška Stojanović, a doctor from the Infectious Diseases Clinic, came to help me. We saw that the child was in a serious life-threatening situation, that seconds separated us. We immediately started resuscitation. We noticed that she had a jaw muscle spasm; we thought she had a seizure or something and immediately started CPR. That lasted a good two minutes. We managed to open her airways, established heart function, and the girl, I would say, came back to life for a moment,” Saša recounts and adds:
“After that, a team of lifeguards who were nearby arrived on the scene. They brought us all the necessary additional equipment to prevent any complications that occur during drowning. We prevented the onset of hypothermia, as well as maintaining oxygen in her lungs. After about five minutes, the emergency medical service also arrived. The girl was already conscious, breathing; we kept her awake, talked to her the whole time, so she was immediately transported to the nearest hospital where she received all possible necessary care.
The parents of little Irina are endlessly grateful for the help that saved their child’s life. She is now stable and will be released from the hospital in a few days.
