It is unclear why pro-government media are criticizing Ivica Dačić so harshly, because he did not announce that he was joining the opposition, but that the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), as before, would not run in elections on the list led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Only the naive can believe that he has switched sides

Ivica Dačić’s decision that the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) will run in the upcoming elections “independently,” i.e. that it will not be on the coalition list led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), has triggered unusually fierce reactions. Especially since the Socialists have not changed their electoral strategy.

In media close to the authorities, it almost immediately acquired a much more serious meaning: Dačić began to be portrayed as a politician distancing himself from Aleksandar Vučić, while SPS is increasingly being described as a possible “Trojan horse of the blockader opposition.”

Informer writes that Dačić’s move is connected to Branko Ružić and his views on the student blockades. In the tabloid’s article, Dačić’s decision is presented not merely as an attempt by SPS to preserve its own political position by running independently, but as a possible part of a broader political plan in which the Socialists could serve as a “Trojan horse” for the blockaders.

Dačić is thus transformed from a party leader attempting to run independently in the elections into a politician who is allegedly opening the door to opponents of the government.

In this narrative, Branko Ružić is given a particularly prominent role, while his previous statements about students and blockades are brought to the forefront in order to portray the change in SPS’s course as something much deeper than an electoral tactic.

Politika also writes about a possible new course for SPS, through a headline linking Dačić and Ružić with the party’s “change of course” and “open doors” for the blockaders. The article points to Dačić’s decision to run independently, as well as Ružić’s position that SPS should be ready to hold talks with all political actors after the elections.

Politika states that there is no confirmation that SPS is negotiating a coalition with the “blockaders.”

So, for now, there is a decision to run independently in the elections and an announcement that the party does not want to close the door in advance to talks after the elections, but there is no confirmed agreement with the opposition.

SPS has not announced that it is joining the opposition, and Dačić has not announced that he is ending his political cooperation with Vučić, so the question is how much Dačić can actually be believed to have switched sides.

Dačić has not announced an alliance with the student list or with any other opposition group, but nevertheless, in the tabloid narrative, SPS’s decision to run independently has already become a sign of political betrayal.

From “we will not run together in the elections,” the narrative moves to “Dačić is betraying Vučić,” and then to a much more serious construction: SPS could be a “Trojan horse” through which the blockader opposition could allegedly come to power.
