China has expressed its willingness to partner with the United States, as the Chinese ambassador to Washington seeks to strengthen dialogue between the world’s two largest economies.
“China has no plan to overtake or replace the United States,” said Xie Feng in a speech in Hong Kong on Friday, addressing Chinese officials and the US ambassador to China.
Beijing is working to reset relations with Washington ahead of Donald Trump’s potential return to the presidency in January. Trump has previously threatened to impose tariffs on Chinese imports exceeding 60%, but Beijing hopes that his protectionist policies will also irritate US allies in Europe and Asia, allowing China to expand its global influence and improve its external trade relations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for the rejection of unilateralism and protectionism in favor of economic globalization.
