Academician Jovan Šetrajčić claims he was attacked and beaten last night in the premises of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Srbobran.
Last night, a blockade of an intersection and a bridge was held in Srbobran. According to Teodora Momčilović, a student at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad who attended the protest in Srbobran, citizens first gathered at the intersection, then proceeded to the bridge. On the path between these two locations are the premises of the Municipal Committee of the Serbian Progressive Party, 021.rs reports.
“As we heard then, a 74-year-old man was beaten in the SNS premises during the protest,” she explained.
Academician Speaks Out After Attack
Academician Jovan Šetrajčić, after reporting the attack to the police and being released from the Urgent Center in Vrbas, returned to the protest in Srbobran and addressed the crowd there.
He stated that during the protest, he was passing by the SNS premises, where several individuals were in front of the building.
“They dragged me inside, kicked me with their feet, hit me with their hands, my glasses were left outside, they hit me everywhere, on my head, and most severely on my left lung. I called the police afterwards, and they came and took me to the hospital. They saw a badge with a bloody hand and a whistle I was carrying, which is probably why they beat me, but they didn’t say anything to me,” he told the protesters.
Student Teodora Momčilović also stated that they were told the police could not enter the SNS premises and arrest the attackers of their fellow citizen because they did not have a warrant.
“They don’t have a warrant to arrest those who attacked a 74-year-old man, and yet they arrest students on the streets across the country,” she emphasized.
“Srbobran Wakes Up” Demands Accountability
The youth group “Srbobran Wakes Up” announced that the professor was beaten and stated that this is the second instance in a few months where SNS members and officials have attacked and beaten people in their premises.
“Due to the last incident, we demanded the resignation of the Mayor of Srbobran, Radivoje Paroški, and called on him to act in accordance with the Code of Ethics which he grossly violated – which, as expected, he refused. This time, we will not demand the resignations of officials who participated in this miserable and cowardly act, nor the resignation of the local official whose husband was a participant and attacker. It is senseless to demand moral responsibility from those who have no morals,” they stated in their announcement.
They emphasized that they demand criminal accountability.
“It’s useless that part of the team fled while the other part locked themselves in and hid behind the police – it has been discovered who was present at the time of the attack. Until there is justice, there will be no peace,” they added.
Students and citizens are organizing another protest tonight in front of the SNS premises in Srbobran starting at 8 PM.
“It seems that the same law does not apply to SNS members and to us, free people. We will remain on the street until those who beat the man yesterday are arrested. The police are not arresting those who beat people; the police are protecting SNS members, not their own citizens,” the protest call stated.
