American travel blogger Steven Cannon revealed on his TikTok profile that he found inspiration to visit Serbia thanks to Novak Đoković and Nikola Jokić, whose careers he closely follows. However, he didn’t expect such impressions.

“Serbians seem like an extremely happy people. As if everyone is super happy. Everywhere I went, people were very kind. It’s a completely different experience for me compared to other Balkan countries,” he said, adding that this also didn’t align with the advice he received before arriving in Serbia.

“I understand it was a generalization, but I was told, at least from the outside, that when you go to the Balkans, the culture might not be as cheerful, if that makes sense. It’s similar in the US, where I’m from – Southern hospitality, and then I moved to California, and it wasn’t quite like that there. But here in Serbia, everyone is really super kind.”

A Familiar Energy

Cannon states that this is precisely why he encountered an energy and atmosphere in Belgrade that reminded him of home.

“Now I’m on one of the main streets, and wherever I go, I feel positive energy, a cheerful spirit. I love it. It’s almost like I’m back home in the US in terms of energy and atmosphere. If that even makes sense. Is that part of your culture? So far, this is the best environment I’ve experienced in any Balkan country. Beautiful street, beautiful area,” Steven concluded as he walked through Belgrade.

In the comments, some confirmed that this positive energy and cordiality are indeed part of daily life, especially concerning attitudes towards foreigners. However, alongside their comments, others tried to offer a broader perspective.

“We are full of worries and difficulties, but we don’t pass them on to others – instead, we always try to make someone’s day better, even if ours was bad,” “Nobody here is happy. Being kind doesn’t mean we’re happy. We are cultured and well-mannered people, but we are not happy! Enjoy Serbia,” “These are our survival mechanisms… dark humor is part of our culture – we laugh when it’s toughest. Poor countries are usually more sociable and cordial,” read just some of the many comments, as reported by Blic.
