Europe’s most decorated basketball coach, Željko Obradović, said he was happy with the election results in Serbia and wished all the best to the young people who emerged victorious.
As Sport Klub recalls, Željko Obradović felt compelled to speak his mind and express his support for the students less than two months after the tragedy in Novi Sad, when the student and citizen protest movement was still in its early stages and change in Serbia seemed nowhere in sight.
Today, a day after that struggle led to the regime’s defeat, Obradović, now the head coach of Panathinaikos, was asked about events in his homeland and the Student List’s victory.
“First of all, I’m very happy that elections were held in my country yesterday and that a large number of people turned out to vote. That means people have a very good understanding of the situation our country is in,” Obradović told Greek journalists, recalling the position he had decided to express on camera for Sport Klub as far back as December 26, 2024.
“My position on the students is something everyone knows very well. I expressed it two years ago. All I can say is that I’m happy with the results and that I wish young people all the best. I want them to understand that our country must be a truly democratic state and that we must show the whole world that we are a very proud people,” Europe’s most decorated coach said, adding:
“I believe they will know how to handle this situation.”
As a reminder, parliamentary elections were held in Serbia yesterday following nearly two years of mass student and citizen protests. The “Student List – Students Win” emerged victorious.
Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat, while citizens took to the streets across the country to celebrate the Student List’s victory.
