U.S. officials have detected unidentified drones above a military base in Washington where Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pentagon chief Pete Hegset live, The Washington Post reported, citing three sources familiar with the situation.
Officials have not yet determined where the drones are coming from, the report said, citing two sources. The appearance of drones above Fort McNair prompted officials to consider relocating Rubio and Hegset to another location. However, the secretaries have not moved for now, the newspaper added, citing a senior administration official.
The paper states that the U.S. military is more closely monitoring potential threats due to an elevated level of alert amid the war of the United States and Israel against Iran.
Reuters could not immediately independently confirm these claims. The Pentagon and the State Department did not respond to requests for comment.
The Pentagon’s chief spokesperson, Sean Parnell, declined to comment on the drone sightings for The Washington Post.
“The Department cannot comment on the movement of the Secretary (Hegset) for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is extremely irresponsible,” Parnell told the Post.
