German Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil today confirmed his readiness to consider a possible ban on the political party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which he called a threat to democracy.

By the way, recent polls have shown that the AfD is currently the single strongest political party. The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, however, designated the AfD as a right-wing extremist party on May 2, when the arsenal of surveillance tools was expanded and a step was taken toward banning the party.

AfD co-chairs Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel then called the decision a blow to democracy.

Lars Klingbeil, who is also the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), told the “Funke” media group that one cannot simply stand by while, as he put it, a clearly right-wing extremist and anti-constitutional party tries to destroy democracy and pursues politics with contempt for humanity.

He added that because of this, democrats are obligated to seriously consider banning the party, and that it remains to be seen whether such a step could be implemented, according to the assessment of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

The Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU), who are a coalition partner of the SPD, have so far been skeptical of the idea of banning the AfD.
