The famous Spanish “Marca” published a major text dedicated to the most promising athletes in the world, and a special place in it was taken by Luka Mijatović, an exceptional 16-year-old American swimmer of Serbian origin, who is currently writing the history of junior swimming.
This young man, born in 2009, is already breaking records set by the legendary Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe, leaving both the audience and experts breathless. His performance at the last U.S. National Championship was spectacular, as he won second place in the 400-meter freestyle and thus secured a place at the World Championship in Singapore. With this, he became the youngest American to participate in a world competition since Phelps back in 2001.
He also broke several American records for the under-18 age group, including the legendary Phelps’s result in the 200m freestyle from 2003, swimming that distance in 1:45.92.
He is a member of the “Pleasanton Seahawks” club and already holds 18 national records by age category, including in the 500, 1000, and 1650m freestyle. In March 2024, he also broke the oldest American junior record in the 1500m freestyle.
He did not shine at the World Championship in Singapore due to food poisoning, but the potential of this young man is huge, and many already see him as the successor to the legendary Michael Phelps.
