The Denver Nuggets have begun renovating their team for next season, aiming to build a new championship squad. To start, they’ve offloaded a player who, according to all expert analyses, was their biggest impediment, both due to his poor performance—largely caused by injuries—and his exorbitant contract, which severely limited the possibility of a trade with another NBA team.

But a miracle still happened…

Brooklyn agreed to take Michael Porter Jr. in a trade, and in return, the Nuggets acquired promising forward Cameron Johnson (29) from the New York team. According to ESPN sources, the Nuggets will also have to give up an unprotected 2032 first-round pick in this deal, but who cares about that anymore.

After changing coaches from Mike Malone to David Adelman and General Manager from Calvin Booth to Calvin Booth, Denver reached the Western Conference semifinals. However, the games against the future champions, Oklahoma City, showed that the team no longer had championship potential and would need reinforcements to be competitive against the young lions from both the Western and Eastern Conferences.

This first step is promising, as Cam Johnson is certainly a player who will have the opportunity to prove his quality in the Nuggets’ rotation. In combination with Nikola Jokic, he might even surpass what he has shown in his career so far.

Johnson graduated from the famous North Carolina University, which was made famous by Michael Jordan before him, along with legendary coach Dean Smith. Last season for the Nets, he averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, so simply replicating these numbers will be enough to improve the Nuggets starting in October.

Of course, it’s not all about numbers. Johnson will need time to integrate, but his basketball IQ promises that this adjustment period to the system created on the court by Nikola Jokic and from the bench by David Adelman won’t last long.
