Following news that the American administration plans to deport about half a million migrants to third countries, and that Serbia is one of the possible destinations, authorities from Serbia have not commented on the matter. From Priština, however, comes the news that the Government of Kosovo has decided to accept up to 50 migrants from the United States within one year.

In response to the request from the United States for the temporary admission and accommodation of third-country nationals, the Government of Kosovo is ready to accept up to 50 individuals who must leave the USA.

“The selection will be made from a proposed list, provided that the individuals meet certain criteria related to the rule of law and public order. During their stay in Kosovo, they will respect the law and have rights provided by our country’s legislation,” said Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

It has not yet been announced where these individuals will be accommodated. The government’s move also has the support of the opposition.

“I think this is an expression of goodwill that we, as Kosovo, have shown. We have proven that we are open and ready to do everything that contributes to strengthening the lasting friendship with the USA. I appreciate this and believe that any cooperation with America is welcome,” says Daut Haradinaj, MP of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo.

“Relations with the USA have deteriorated in the last four years, due to a passive and arrogant foreign policy towards our allies. However, the USA has always had a good relationship with the people of Kosovo and our democratic institutions. The return of migrants to Kosovo is another proof of their commitment,” says Artan Behramaj from the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

Observers point out that this is a strategically important decision.

Furthermore, this is not the first time that Kosovo has participated in such international initiatives. In 2021, Kosovo accepted about 1,900 Afghan citizens evacuated after the Taliban’s return to power. They were accommodated in the ‘Liya’ camp at the American military base Bondsteel near Uroševac, which was closed after two years.

Also, preparations are underway for the implementation of the agreement with Denmark, which was ratified in the Assembly of Kosovo.

According to that agreement, from 2027, Denmark will rent 300 prison cells in KPZ Gnjilane for the accommodation of foreign prisoners, who will be deported after serving their sentences.

In return, Kosovo will receive more than 200 million euros, which will be invested in improving the Penitentiary Service and renewable energy projects.
