U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that Ukraine needs to hold elections before signing a peace agreement.

“We have a situation where there have been no elections in Ukraine, where we have a state of emergency, effectively a state of emergency,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort when asked to comment on Russia’s demands to sign a peace agreement only after elections are held in Ukraine, CNN reports.

Trump stated that “support for Zelensky in Ukraine has fallen to four percent” and that the country is “blown to pieces.” He noted that most cities, except Kyiv, have been destroyed.

“Shouldn’t the people of Ukraine say, you know, it’s been a long time since we had elections?” Trump continued.

He added that this is not about what Russia says regarding elections but rather his personal stance, as well as the stance of “many other countries.”

Trump also suggested that Ukraine was responsible for the Russian invasion three years ago, saying that Kyiv could have made a deal back then and avoided the conflict.

“You shouldn’t have started this,” Trump said in this regard.

The U.S. president stated that he would not oppose the deployment of European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement.

“If they want that, great. I’m completely in favor,” Trump said, while also emphasizing that he would not send American troops to Ukraine.

Where is all the money that was given?

Trump stated that Zelensky previously mentioned that not all the funds allocated by the United States had reached Ukraine.

“We gave them, I believe, $350 billion,” the White House chief continued. “That’s a lot, and Europe should match that amount. But they only gave $100 billion. We have an ocean between us, and they (Europe and Ukraine) do not. But where is all the money that was given? Where did it go? No one has ever seen reports on this. We’re giving hundreds of billions of dollars. I don’t see any reports,” he emphasized.

He also stressed that he wants peace to be established in Ukraine so that no more people die.

“I see people being killed—these are Russians and Ukrainians, but they are people, no matter where they’re from, all over the planet. And I believe I have the ability to end this war,” the U.S. president stated.

Trump reiterated that he could negotiate a deal for Ukraine and added that his predecessor in the White House, Joseph Biden, handled this “badly, pathetically, and sadly.”

“I could make a deal for Ukraine to get back almost all of its land—almost all of its land—and no one would have died, no city would have been destroyed, not a single tower would have been toppled. But they decided not to do it that way,” Trump concluded.

Trump Reveals Why Ukraine Was Not Invited to Negotiations in Riyadh

The President of the United States dismissed Ukraine’s complaints about not being present at the meeting in Saudi Arabia and stated that they had plenty of time to negotiate.

“I’m very disappointed. I hear they are upset about not having a seat at the negotiating table. Well, they had a seat for the past three years and long before that,” Trump said.

“This could have been resolved many years ago without losing much land—very little land. Without losing lives and without losing cities,” Trump emphasized, according to the BBC.

He added that under his leadership, America is now “putting out fires around the world.”

When asked how today’s talks with Russia went, Trump said they were “very good.”

“Russia wants to do something; they want to stop the wild barbarism. Thousands of soldiers are being killed on a weekly basis—it’s ridiculous. We want to end this; it’s a senseless war,” Trump said.

Commenting on the possibility of European troops being stationed in Ukraine after a peace agreement, Trump said it would be great.

“If they want that, that’s great, but we won’t have to send them there because we are very far away,” Trump said.

He added that he wants to end the war in Ukraine to save millions of lives.

“That is my wish, even though this topic may be more important for Europeans than for us. We have an ocean in between, and they don’t,” he stated.
