In front of the Saint Sava Temple in Belgrade on Christmas morning, a traditional breaking of the česnica (a special Christmas bread with a coin hidden inside), weighing over 200 kilograms and containing 33 gold coins, took place in the presence of hundreds of believers, with the youngest being the most delighted.
The Union of Bakers of Serbia, which organized the event, announced that the česnica was made with over 200 kilograms of flour, from which 7,000 layers were made. The luckiest hands were obviously those of the youngest – children and babies who ended up with the gold coins.
One of the first to find a gold coin was a boy named Strahinja Tošerić from Belgrade, and his parents were overjoyed and wished everyone a happy and blessed holiday.

The Blagovčanin family was at the Temple for the first time on Christmas, and their son Stefan was lucky.
“We’re from Canada, this is our first time here. We’re celebrating the happiest holiday in a home environment with our loved ones. Here are Stefan, Anja, Nikolina, and mom Bojana,” said father Vlada, whose hands were shaking with happiness and excitement as he held the gold coin.
Some families say they come every year with their children, while others found a gold coin for the first time.
Mother Katarina Milenković was at the Temple with her two daughters who firmly believed they would find a ducat.

“We came here last year too, but now we’ve found a gold coin. Three-year-old Nora was lucky, and her eight-year-old sister Helena was saying all morning that she would be lucky. Her wish came true,” says the happy mother, who is from Kraljevo but lives in Belgrade.
Many believers were delighted by the Ilić family, who came to the breaking of the česnica with four children. Their grandmother was carrying one grandson in a sling, and their mother, Marija, was holding their daughter who had found a gold coin.

“We’re from Mala Moštanica near Obrenovac. I gave birth to four children, I have three sons and a daughter who is here for the first time. We couldn’t come last year because they were too young, and now we’re here in full force. Family is the foundation of every society, family is everything, and that’s why we’re here today. Christmas is a children’s holiday, children should be happy,” emphasized Marija Ilić and continued:
“Since our daughter is still a baby, we will keep her ducat in her box, which will have a special place in the house, and when she grows up a bit, we will show her what she found on Christmas in front of the Temple. It brings luck and health.”
