After last year’s winner – the word “duhoklonuće” as a replacement for depression, this year’s winner of the Best New Serbian Word competition organized by the Mala biblioteka website in London is “rasanica”.
The winners of the competition, which lasted from May 11 to September 30, were announced today on Radio Belgrade in the Magazin program. Out of a total of 661 proposed words, a nine-member jury voted based on 130 words that made up the shortlist, and first place and a prize of 600 euros were won by Elena Kosanić from Sremski Mihaljevci, who proposed the word “rasanica”.
What does “rasanica” mean?
Interestingly, the winning word was proposed by a six-year-old girl, and there is also an explanation – “rasanica” means “emerging from a state of confusion, uncertainty, as when something ‘clicks’ in our minds, the essence of an event becomes clear.”
Elena used the word when her grandmother explained how she had realized something that morning. During her story, she said: “You had a rasanica!” reports N1.

“Vanrodan” instead of “nonbinary”
Second place and a cash prize of 400 euros were won by Rahela Taylor from Belgrade for the word “vanrodan”. The word is a replacement for the English “nonbinary”. The belief or opinion that a person belongs neither to the male nor female gender, therefore is “outside the category”.
Third place and a prize of 200 euros for the word “snomilje” was won by Mihajlo Miljanić, also from Belgrade. The word describes the feeling of mild, warm happiness that you feel just before falling asleep, when pleasant images, memories, or fantasies run through your mind, creating a feeling of bliss and tranquility.
“Tiholjublje” first by public vote
At the same time, the public voted online for the new best Serbian word from the 26 that made it to the shortlist. In the voting, which was open until November 7, around 6,000 votes were cast. The top three words in the public vote receive a book as a prize.
In the public vote, the first place was taken by the word “tiholjublje” – it refers to someone towards whom we have tender and beautiful feelings but who is far away. More precisely, as explained, tiholjublje can be a state of mind and infatuation with someone to whom we cannot immediately and directly give or reciprocate love, but rather do so secretly or quietly from a distance, and perhaps partly in secret.
In second place in the public vote is the word “snomilje” which also won the jury’s prize, and third is the word “ponesuša” which would replace the expression “coffee to go”, following the English “coffee to go”.
