Dr. Aleksandar Simonović, a professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade, has been arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to Kurir that two Serbian citizens were arrested on September 19 in Kyrgyzstan and that the Serbian consulate in Moscow, which is taking all necessary actions within its jurisdiction, was informed of their detention.
Dr. Aleksandar Simonović’s wife, Branka Simonović, also confirmed that her husband had been arrested abroad. She told the IN4S portal that her husband had traveled to Kyrgyzstan as a translator and expert consultant with a travel order from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
She added that her friends explained that there had been a case of mistaken identity, that the best lawyer had been hired, and that everything would be resolved quickly, as reported by N1.
“As time went on, it became clear to us that it was something much more serious, and in the end, it turned out that they were detained for bribery, which has nothing to do with the truth, at least as far as my husband is concerned,” Branka Simonović categorically stated in a statement for IN4S.

“We were advised not to speak out, but we were also silent because of the family. My husband’s mother is in poor health, and we are aware that this news will further complicate things for her. But we have nowhere else to turn; it is clear that if our institutions and the public do not get involved, everything can go wrong. These are human lives. The fate of our family is in the hands of people who know that my husband is not guilty. The company he worked with has a signed agreement on business and technical cooperation with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering,” said Branka Simonović.
She added that she knows her husband is not guilty and is not involved in anything dishonest.
“His colleagues, friends, and everyone who knows him know that. That’s why I appeal to the state authorities, to our diplomacy, to contribute. Saša’s friends contacted our embassy in Moscow, whose jurisdiction Kyrgyzstan is under, and they ordered the chargé d’affaires in Kyrgyzstan to investigate the case. The chargé d’affaires was in Bishkek, but he could not meet with the detainees, which is another reason for fear and evidence of the level of human rights and freedoms,” she said.
Dr. Aleksandar Simonović, once one of the youngest professors at the University of Belgrade, recently the vice-dean for teaching and head of the Department of Aeronautics, is a lecturer in 13 subjects at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and a prolific scientist, as evidenced by dozens of published papers, according to the media.
