The summit of BRICS member countries begins on Tuesday in Kazan, but Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić will not attend the event, despite uncertainty over his decision throughout the weekend, which was postponed until the last day. Vučić will start a working visit to Slovakia on Tuesday, during which he will participate in a trilateral summit taking place in Komárno.
As announced on Monday by the president’s office, Vučić will join Prime Ministers Robert Fico and Viktor Orban at the trilateral summit of leaders from Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary. However, although the president will not go, this does not exclude the possibility that a representative from the Serbian government may travel to Russia. Whether this will happen will be revealed tonight when Vučić addresses the public. He will speak on RTS about BRICS, European integration, the profitability of lithium mining, Kosovo, and talks with Pristina.

Vučić previously stated that he has many important discussions planned with foreign guests during the week of the summit. Initially, he announced that he would reveal whether he would go to Russia on October 10 or 15, and later postponed his answer to October 20 or 21.
“If I say I am going to Kazan, it will be announced that this is the end of Serbia’s European path, and that Serbia has finally made its choice and destroyed itself. If I say the opposite, they will say I have betrayed the Russians and done who knows what”, Vučić told reporters last week after a ceremony marking the Day of the Security-Information Agency.
The decision not to attend the BRICS Summit follows a phone conversation between Vučić and Russian President Vladimir Putin. They spoke on Sunday regarding the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade, as well as political and economic topics. Vučić also conveyed that Putin extended an invitation to him for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism in Moscow next year.
