On this day, exactly 34 years ago, Crvena Zvezda footballers achieved historic success by winning the title of European champion.
On May 29, 1991, at the Saint Nikola Stadium in Bari, the red and whites defeated Olympique Marseille in the final of the then Champions Cup after a penalty shootout (5:3), following a 0:0 draw after 120 minutes of play.
On their way to the final, Zvezda eliminated Grasshoppers (1:1, 4:1), Glasgow Rangers (3:0, 1:1), Dynamo Dresden (3:0, 2:1), and Bayern Munich (2:1, 2:2).
Captain and goalkeeper Stevan Stojanović saved the first penalty in the shootout from Manuel Amoros, while all of Zvezda’s players were precise (Prosinečki, Binić, Belodedić, Mihajlović, and Pančev).
Zvezda played in the following lineup: Stojanović, Jugović, Marović, Šabanadžović, Belodedić, Najdoski, Prosinečki, Mihajlović, Pančev, Savićević (Stošić), Binić.
Duško Radinović, who had been a regular starter until the final, missed out due to injury.
The team’s coach was Ljupko Petrović, who surprised everyone in the final with a defensive tactic, despite his team having previously played offensively and efficiently.
It turned out he was right, and Zvezda won the most important trophy in European football on penalties.
Zvezda will traditionally mark this historic success today at the Rajko Mitić Stadium.
