Several major U.S. studies indicate a significant decrease in the number of young people who identify as transgender or non-binary over the past two years, according to data analyzed by researchers and independent organizations.

According to the results of the annual survey by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which includes more than 50,000 students at around 250 universities, the share of students identifying as non-binary peaked in 2023 and was then cut in half, writes the scientific journal Skeptic.

A similar trend has been confirmed in internal surveys conducted by the Andover Phillips school and by the student newspaper at Brown University, both reporting a sharp decline in non-binary identification since 2023.

An additional analysis was published by psychology professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University, citing data from the Cooperative Election Study (CES) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey.

According to these data, transgender identification among young people aged 18 to 22 decreased by nearly half from 2022 to 2024, while non-binary identification dropped by more than half between 2023 and 2024.

A decline was also recorded among elementary and high-school students, according to the “Monitoring the Future” study.

Researchers stated that the decrease is not linked to a rise in conservative attitudes or religiosity among young people, nor to changes in their political views.
