Schools and other institutions from Texas to Georgia are closed today or are preparing to close due to the forecast of sleet and snow that will, according to forecasts, cover a large part of the southern United States.
In Texas, classes have been canceled for over a million students, while schools are also closed in Kansas and in Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas. In the Dallas area, authorities have prepared roads for the expected 5 to 10 centimeters of snow, while up north, near Oklahoma, up to 12 centimeters of snow is expected.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the state has deployed emergency teams and urged citizens not to drive in bad weather conditions. In Arlington, where 75,000 fans are expected to attend the college football semifinal, crews will be ready to address potential road problems.

A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected in states from New Mexico to Alabama, with the heaviest snowfall forecast for Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The storm is expected to continue moving northeast to the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, and it is possible that parts of Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia could receive up to 20 centimeters of snow by Saturday.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced the closure of some state offices for tomorrow, while Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens will close city offices and employees will work from home.
In Kansas, farmers and ranchers are particularly hard hit by the heavy snowfall.
Thousands of flights across the US have been canceled or delayed due to snowstorms, while numerous traffic accidents have been reported in Virginia, Indiana, Kansas, and Kentucky. In other parts of the country, such as West Virginia, North Carolina, and Kansas, there have been fatalities in traffic accidents caused by bad weather conditions.
