In a country considered to have one of the safest and strictest child protection systems, Sweden, one Serbian father faced a nightmare he couldn’t have predicted. He suddenly became a suspect and went through a multi-month investigation by social services and the police, all because of a sentence his four-year-old son said at kindergarten.
This father of three, who has lived and worked in Sweden for years, decided to share his story in the Facebook group “Serbs in Sweden.”
“I Wouldn’t Wish This on My Worst Enemy”
“I’m a father of three children; they are my world. My youngest son (4) has a vivid imagination, often saying: ‘I saw Godzilla, a giraffe came to my kindergarten…’ He’s a child that age; we didn’t pay it much attention, thinking it would pass,” the Serbian man began his story.
He further explains that the situation became extremely complicated when his son started making more serious claims. In his account, the father described how he suddenly lost his sense of security and trust in the system, and how his family, though innocent, experienced public condemnation and stigmatization.
“He started coming home from kindergarten and saying that the teachers were hitting him. Knowing his age and fantasies, we didn’t take it seriously. However, he also said that I was hitting him, which absolutely never happened! The kindergarten immediately called social services and the police, and there we were, in hell. For months, we literally went through hell, and I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy,” he wrote.
Shocking Discovery About the Serbian Woman Who Reported Them
Although the father provided video recordings where the boy said he was being hit at the kindergarten, not at home, the police continued the procedure.
In the continuation of his confession, he revealed a detail that particularly distressed him.
“Without any evidence, witnesses, or a single bruise—literally based on the word of a four-year-old. We hired the best defense lawyer. When the woman saw the case, she just laughed and said: ‘They have nothing.’ And here it is, today I welcomed my freedom and the end of months of hell. The most interesting part of the story is that we were reported by none other than a Serbian woman from Jagodina who came here after the bombing. Even though she knew us through the kindergarten and could see how much we care for our children, she reported us without a shred of remorse. She simply didn’t care!” he wrote.
“I Fell into Depression, I Was Confused, I Started to Doubt”
Finally, the Serbian father sent a message to all parents raising children abroad.
“One word from a child can turn your life into hell. I felt terrible for months; I fell into severe depression for the first time. In the end, I was confused; I even started to doubt whether I was a bad parent, whether I could have and should have done more. Justice and truth ultimately won. I was thinking about whether to write all this, but here it is, out of my personal ignorance, I found myself in this situation, and I pray that no one else has to go through it,” he concluded.
