President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić is attending today’s opening of the high-speed railway Belgrade – Subotica. He will ride the Soko train from Belgrade to Subotica.
After two weeks of testing, the third section of the high-speed railway Belgrade – Subotica, from Novi Sad to Subotica, is being opened.
“I believe this is a great success for Serbia,” said Vučić in the carriage of the high-speed train to Subotica.
“For Serbia, it is not only important to build high-speed railways, but also regular ones. That is why we are now trying to find money to construct and reconstruct the railways between Pančevo, Opovo, Zrenjanin, Kikinda, Subotica, Sombor, and connect them again with Vrbas,” Vučić added.
Construction of this section began in November 2021, and the railway, about 108.1 kilometers long, will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. On the route of the Novi Sad – Subotica high-speed railway, four bridges and two viaducts (with a total length of 2.3 km), 27 overpasses (3.9 km), and 15 underpasses (32.3 km) were built, among other infrastructure.
For the first time in Serbia, three ecoducts were constructed, each 46 meters long, enabling animals to cross the railway safely, on the sections Lovćenac – Bačka Topola, Bačka Topola – Žednik, and Subotica – state border. A total of 33 culverts were also built, about 800 meters long in total, as well as 14 pedestrian underpasses.
On the new railway, 302 switches were installed, while construction required about eight and a half million cubic meters of earthworks and 762 thousand cubic meters of crushed stone.
The construction of the high-speed railway with speeds up to 200 km/h between Belgrade and Budapest is one of the largest and most significant investment and infrastructure projects in this part of Europe.
Along the entire Belgrade–Novi Sad–Subotica high-speed railway, 16 stations, three stops, and six stations with railway facilities were built or reconstructed.
It is planned that the Soko train between Novi Sad and Subotica will travel in 41 minutes, while the journey between Belgrade and Subotica will take about 79 minutes, and inter-regio trains will take 54 minutes from Novi Sad to Subotica and about 99 minutes from Belgrade to Subotica.
The contractor was the Chinese consortium “China Railway International” and “China Communications Construction Company,” and the project involved more than two hundred subcontractors and suppliers, mostly from Serbia, but also a large number from EU countries.
