Veterans of the 63rd Parachute Brigade, because they were banned from entering the unit’s headquarters, marked October 14, the Brigade Day and the unit’s patron saint day, themselves in Niš, write Južne vesti.

The veterans, as stated in the text, laid roses at the monument to the victims of the NATO bombing in the center of Niš and pronounced the oath of the veterans of the 63rd Parachute Brigade. They believe that their entry into the unit was banned due to their support for the student protests.

The veterans of the 63rd Parachute Brigade gathered at the monument in front of the Banovina building because they wanted to mark the Brigade Day and the patron saint day themselves since they were not invited to the official celebration, this media reports.

“For the first time in the history of the brigade since its existence, 81 years, veterans of the parachute brigade have been forbidden access to attend the patron saint day and the celebration of our unit. The most likely reason is that the majority of veterans took part in the protests and in the protection of students at the protests over the past year. This is most likely the reason for banning access to our unit, which we are very sorry about. It is difficult for all of us. Why we could not attend the Unit Day,” says Hasan Omerović for Južne vesti.

They agreed, as Omerović says, to gather in cities and pay tribute to their fallen comrades in the wars of the nineties until the year 2000.

“To mark our unit day in that way. Shame on those who forbade us entry. When it was necessary to fight, we did not ask ourselves who belonged to which political option, who voted for whom, who was in prison and so on. We all responded. I was an elder and now I am with the fighters I was in the trench with and I will be with them forever. Where they are, I will be too,” Omerović emphasized for this media.

The veterans in Niš, as written, laid a rose on the monument to the victims of the bombing and then pronounced their oath, and four students came and brought a thank you note to the veterans for their support and protection during the protests and struggle that the students have been leading for almost a year.

According to the unofficial information of Južne vesti, there is no ceremony in the brigade because Ilija Todorov, the commander of the 63rd Parachute Brigade, recently passed away.

Nevertheless, the questions of why the veterans were not allowed into the unit are the ones that the journalists of Južne vesti sent to the 63rd Parachute Brigade, whose headquarters are in Niš.
