The Kremlin views positively Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s willingness to negotiate peace, as expressed in a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said today.
However, he reminded that the decree previously signed by Zelensky, which prohibits negotiations with Moscow, is still in effect, Interfax reports.
“We have a positive stance. The question is—who do we sit down with (at the negotiating table)? For now, the legal ban preventing the Ukrainian president from negotiating with the Russian side remains in force. So, in general, the approach is positive, but the details have not changed,” Peskov stated.
Trump, in his address to Congress on Tuesday, revealed that Zelensky had sent him a letter expressing his readiness to negotiate a peace settlement, Politika reports, citing Tanjug.
“The letter states that Ukraine is ready to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible to move closer to lasting peace and that no one wants peace more than the Ukrainians. Zelensky also wrote that he and his team are prepared to work under the strong leadership of President Trump to achieve a lasting peace. He also conveyed his appreciation for U.S. support in preserving Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence,” Trump said.
