A devastating aviation accident has occurred in Washington! A military helicopter collided with a passenger plane near Ronald Reagan National Airport, and both aircraft burst into flames immediately upon impact and were completely destroyed.

Flight 5342 of American Airlines had 60 passengers on board, while the military helicopter carried four crew members. Although the search for possible survivors is still ongoing, it is almost certain that all passengers in both aircraft perished on the spot.

Fire and emergency services confirmed that a small aircraft crashed near the Potomac River, close to Reagan National Airport, adding that fireboats were on the scene.

Ongoing rescue efforts are concentrated near the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge. The two aircraft collided while approaching runway 33 at Reagan Airport at approximately 9 PM local time.

Authorities are currently searching for the black boxes and investigating the cause of the collision.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem released a statement regarding the crash of the Black Hawk helicopter and the American Airlines plane:

“We are deploying all available resources from the U.S. Coast Guard for search and rescue efforts in this horrific incident. We are actively monitoring the situation and are ready to support local forces,” Noem wrote on the X platform.

The collision at Washington’s Reagan National Airport is the first accident involving a U.S. commercial plane since 2009.

Colgan Air Flight 3407, flying from Newark, New Jersey, to Buffalo, New York, crashed during landing near Buffalo Niagara International Airport on February 12, 2009. The plane struck a house, killing all 45 passengers and four crew members.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt released a statement from President Donald Trump:

“I am fully informed about the terrible accident that just occurred at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you to our incredible emergency responders for their efforts. I am following the situation and will provide more details soon,” Trump said.

Three soldiers were aboard the Black Hawk helicopter that collided with the American Airlines plane, confirmed Jennifer Griffin from Fox News.

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a medium-lift military utility helicopter with four rotor blades and two engines, capable of carrying 15 people, including two pilots, two crew chiefs, and two rescue specialists.

All flights to the airport have been suspended in the meantime.

A video posted on X, recorded by a webcam at the Kennedy Center, captured what appeared to be an explosion in the air near the Potomac River.
