Ahmed Al Ahmed, the man who stole a weapon from the attacker during the attack in Australia, was not the only civilian who reacted heroically in the chaos. Footage from Bondi Beach shows another man running straight towards the gunfire, at a moment when the police were trying to contain the situation. That man has now been identified as a refugee from the Middle East and a father of two children.

His lawyer, Alison Battisson, confirmed to CNN that it is a person without a settled legal status in Australia, but who nevertheless consciously risked his own life to help the police and prevent further casualties.

“He comes from a country where you know when there is gunfire”

Battisson explained that her client, whom she referred to by the initials “AB,” arrived at Bondi Beach by taxi and immediately reacted as soon as he heard gunshots. His pregnant wife and two children are Australian citizens.

“He comes from a country where you know when there is gunfire,” Battisson said. “He just knew he had to run there to help stop it.”

The footage that spread on social networks shows one of the attackers, Navid Akram, shooting from a bridge before being hit and falling to the ground. Soon after, AB, dressed in black, is seen approaching the downed attacker with his hands raised.

@razazziz Brave hero who tackled the bondi shooter has been identified as Ahmad Al Ahmad. He is injured with bullet wounds in his shoulder, keep him and his family in your duas 🙏🏾 Allah swt tells us in the Quran, “whoever takes a life, it will be as if they killed all of humanity; and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity” #sydney #bondi #australia ♬ original sound – Raz Aziz

Drama on the bridge

According to the lawyer, AB sheltered behind a pine tree along with a detective, waiting for the right moment.

“He made his way to the stairs and when the attacker fell, he ran up the stairs,” she added. “The attacker was still holding a gun, and he pushed it away with his foot.”

Approaching the armed man, AB stepped directly into the line of police fire.

“He pushed the gun away with his foot and there was confusion because people thought he was the attacker, so the police shot at him,” Battisson recounted. The situation calmed down only when the detective ran towards the police officers and shouted: “No, he’s with me.”

Battisson emphasized the irony of the whole situation.

“He ran toward the shooting, yelling for help,” she said. “The government won’t give him a permanent visa. He has no right to stay here, and yet he ran forward to help the Australian community.”
