The United States and Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran early Saturday morning, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and two American officials confirmed, according to CNN.
The attacks were launched in the morning hours while millions of people were at work and children were attending school.
According to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, three explosions were heard in central Tehran.
The Israeli strike on Iran, carried out earlier today, was coordinated with the United States, an Israeli source confirmed to CNN.
The attack targeted ballistic missiles and missile launch systems, which Israel considers a serious threat to its national security.
A U.S. official confirmed that American military strikes against Iran are ongoing, the The New York Times reported.
The attack came after U.S. President Donald Trump had for weeks threatened military action over Iran’s nuclear program and the violent suppression of protests in the country, during which a large number of people were killed.
Trump confirms attack
President Donald Trump confirmed in a video posted on social media that the United States had launched a military campaign in Iran.
“Our goal is to defend the American people by eliminating immediate threats from the Iranian regime, a malicious group of very tough, terrible people,” Trump said in the video.
“Their threatening activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases abroad, and our allies around the world,” he stated in the eight-minute address.
“The Iranian regime has for 47 years chanted ‘Death to America’ and conducted a continuous campaign of bloodshed and mass killings targeting the United States, our troops, and innocent people in many, many countries,” he added.
