Students and citizens are gathering in front of the City Assembly because, they say, they want to prevent today’s session of the city parliament from being held on the Day of Mourning.

All entrances to the Assembly are secured by strong police forces in riot gear, and employees of the city parliament are currently entering the building without hindrance.

Students want to express their dissatisfaction in this way because the session of the City Assembly is scheduled on the Day of Mourning.

As they say, they believe that this move by the city shows that Novi Sad does not empathize with the tragedy that has struck the entire region.

There are a total of 60 items on the agenda of the session, and councilors will, among other things, discuss personnel solutions for city administrations, the program for regulating construction land, as well as investment activities of public utility companies for this year.

To remind you, Novi Sad students blocked the City Assembly around midnight. The intervention police reacted and started beating some students, and there are injured among them. The situation was calmed by the Gendarmerie which was deployed.

Students blocked all entrances to the Novi Sad City Assembly, the night before the session where the budget and 160 other agenda items were to be voted on. The plan was not to enter the building, but to block all entrances and spend the night there. Their action was unannounced, they called on professors and citizens to join them, writes N1.

Citizens brought them blankets so they wouldn’t be cold during the night.

After the previous session, on January 24, when strong police forces secured the building and when the new mayor Žarko Mićin was elected, students condemned the undemocratic atmosphere in which the session was held and announced their arrival at the next session.

In December, the session was canceled three times and requests from student representatives to address the councilors were rejected three times.

Due to the inability to hold the session during December, Novi Sad entered 2025 without a budget.

The session was scheduled day after day – on Monday around 10 am it was announced that it would be held on Tuesday at 10 am. Around 2:30 am, the Gendarmerie appeared from the direction of Stražilovska Street and Mihajlo Pupin Boulevard. They then deployed along the fence in front of the city assembly building on Žarko Zrenjanin Street.

Students remained in the middle between two groups of gendarmes, who pushed them from both sides. One part remained at the main entrance to the building.

Students chanted “go to Kosovo” several times. They also tried to explain to the police that they were on the same side and that there was no need for force, they begged them to take off their masks. After pushing and shouting, the situation calmed down.

Miran Pogačar, councilor and member of the “Bravo” movement, was detained last night during the blockade of the Novi Sad City Assembly.

The “Bravo” movement issued a statement demanding an urgent response from the police and the immediate release of Pogačar.
