STEFAN IVANOVIĆ LAID TO REST: Hero From Crans-Montana Sent Off to His Final Rest, Large Number of People Came From Switzerland!

Stefan Ivanović (31), a young man from Ljig who lost his life in a fire that broke out on New Year’s Eve in a bar in Crans-Montana, was buried today in his hometown of Jajčić. On that day, by decision of the Municipality of Ljig, a Day of Mourning was declared as a sign of remembrance and respect for the young fellow citizen who lost his life too soon.

Flags on buildings of public institutions were lowered to half-mast, while cultural and entertainment events were canceled.

Silence prevailed in the town and surrounding area, and an atmosphere of grief and disbelief could be felt at every step. Citizens spontaneously gathered in front of the Ivanović family home, leaving flowers and lighting candles, while near the house of the deceased young man an emergency medical team, as well as a police vehicle, were on duty the entire time.

Stefan Ivanović was sent off to his final resting place in the presence of a large number of people—family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, as well as citizens who may not have known him personally but wished to pay their last respects. The procession of people accompanying the coffin testified to how respected and loved Stefan was in his community.

This is an irreparable loss for our town. Stefan was young, well-mannered, and always ready to help. All of Ljig is mourning as one family – said one of the family’s friends.

Hundreds of people came from Switzerland alone to be with the family on this saddest of days. Given that Stefan, in addition to his security job, also worked another, additional job, his second employer also attended the funeral.

More than a hundred people came from Switzerland to send Stefan off to his final resting place, villagers provided them with accommodation, and together with the family and colleagues, Stefan’s second employer also came. It is evident how loved and respected the young man was – one local resident told Kurir.

The funeral service was held in the presence of clergy, while sobs and silence alternated among those gathered. Many could not hide their emotions, and some left the cemetery in tears.

Representatives of the local government said that the Day of Mourning was declared in order to “express deep condolences to the Ivanović family and show the unity of the community in moments of great sorrow.”

In the Municipality of Ljig, January 10 was declared a Day of Mourning on the occasion of Stefan’s death while rescuing people from a fire-engulfed facility in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. In moments like these, words are superfluous. All that remains is to preserve the memory of Stefan and be a support to his family – our interlocutor emphasized.

To remind, Ivanović, who was working as security in a Swiss bar on the fateful night, went missing after the fire from which he was rescuing guests of the venue. Despite his absence for days, family, friends, and colleagues believed that Ivanović was in a hospital somewhere but could not be identified due to injuries. Unfortunately, the police informed the family that with the help of DNA profiles provided by his parents, Stefan was identified as one of the 40 victims of the horrific fire in which another 119 people were injured, among whom there were three more Serbian citizens.
