The Government of the Republic of Serbia and the United Nations Development Programme have signed a new financing agreement in the amount of two million euros (about 2.15 million dollars) to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy sector, the UNDP announced.

The contribution will, as stated in the announcement, be directed toward the procurement and delivery of high-voltage transformers – key equipment needed to restore electricity transmission capacity and ensure a stable supply for millions of Ukrainian citizens. These activities are being implemented within the framework of the UNDP Green Energy Recovery program, it was added.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Ukraine, Andon Sapundži, emphasized, as highlighted, Serbia’s commitment to supporting the restoration of Ukraine’s key infrastructure.

“Serbia stands with the people of Ukraine as they face unprecedented challenges in the field of energy security. This contribution is concrete proof of our support for the restoration of essential services, so that hospitals, schools, and households remain supplied with electricity in these difficult times,” said the ambassador, as reported by the UNDP.

The UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, Jaco Cilliers, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership.

“This generous support from the Government of Serbia comes at a crucial moment, as we work on the repair and modernization of the national electricity grid. High-voltage transformers are essential for the integrity of the electricity transmission system. By restoring these capacities, we are not only addressing urgent needs and preparing for the next heating season, but we are laying the foundations for a more resilient and sustainable energy future,” he said.

The project aims, as explained, to improve access to basic services – including heating, electricity, and water supply – for the population in affected areas with significant infrastructure damage. It is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework in Ukraine and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (affordable and clean energy).
