Hundreds of arrested students and citizens are not alone. Now, the Alek Kavčić Foundation has joined the efforts of the Belgrade Bar Association and the Serbian Bar Association, which are providing legal aid to those detained. The Foundation announced it is ready to financially assist in covering the defense costs of students and citizens.
The Alek Kavčić Foundation is joining the initiative of the Belgrade Bar Association and the Serbian Bar Association, which are providing legal assistance to students and citizens arrested during protests and blockades. The Foundation states that they are ready to financially assist and cover defense costs.
As announced on the Alek Kavčić Foundation’s website, they have launched a project to assist detained students, citizens, and their families.
“The Serbian Bar Association and the Belgrade Bar Association reacted to the excessive use of force by both formal and informal police forces and made all their capacities available to protest participants, calling on lawyers to respond and sign up for a list for pro bono representation of students.
The Foundation supports the decision and determination of lawyers to represent students free of charge in criminal proceedings and wishes to contribute to the students’ defense by enabling the families of arrested students, through the lawyers who represent them pro bono, to apply with appropriate evidence for reimbursement of material costs incurred during the criminal proceedings (court fees, travel expenses – if the client was arrested or detained in another city, engagement of consultants or experts in the proceedings, as well as all other costs arising during the proceedings, payment of aid for a detainee’s canteen, and similar), which would otherwise burden the arrested student’s family,” states the Alek Kavčić Foundation’s website.

Conditions for receiving reimbursement of material costs borne by the family are: Written power of attorney for the engaged defense counsel and proof of pro bono representation, and proof of incurred costs.
The Alek Kavčić Foundation requests that all evidence be submitted by students and citizens through their defense lawyers, through whom the reimbursement will also be delivered to the families. The Foundation emphasizes that this is being done to financially relieve the families of arrested students and provide aid to those who need it most, namely the students.
“As a recommendation from the Foundation, we provide a list of lawyers most frequently chosen by students and faculties according to our research. To initiate proceedings, we advise contacting one of the lawyers whose names and phone numbers are published on the foundation’s website at this link.
This assistance does not include reimbursement for court-appointed lawyers, as that is covered by state budget funds.
