Students in blockade, citizens’ assemblies, and other citizens today organized an urgent collection of financial and material donations to help those affected by the fires.
Citizens’ assemblies organized donation collections for those endangered by the fires in “several municipalities around Niš,” while students in blockade are collecting for volunteers participating in fire suppression efforts in the Kuršumlija and Toplica regions.
“Unfortunately, once again, the burden of fighting the fire has fallen on the local residents and citizens of good will. Our common goal is to provide them with the support they need most at this moment. Let’s be human. Let’s protect and care for each other when the state doesn’t care for us. Together we will succeed,” stated the appeals from citizens’ assemblies and students.
Collection Points and Needed Items
Donations will be collected at the Niš Cultural Center starting at 5 PM, at “Idea” in Božidarčeva Street at 5 PM, at Delta at 5 PM, and on Somborski Boulevard across from “Burence” at 7 PM. Collections are expected to last for approximately one hour.
For all those affected by the fires and those assisting in the extinguishing efforts, financial donations, bottled water, canned food, and basic groceries are needed. Also required are firefighting equipment such as shovels, hoses, axes, and other tools for cutting vegetation and forests, protective gloves, masks, high-temperature resistant clothing, rubber boots, and similar protective gear, as announced by the assemblies.
Faculty of Philosophy Establishes Donation Center
The Faculty of Philosophy today established a donation reception center, which will operate daily from 10 AM to midnight.
“All those from Niš who wish to help can do so at any time during the day. Currently, bottled water, canned food, rubber boots and gloves, fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment, first aid and burn treatment supplies, gas masks, rakes, and tools for cutting vegetation are needed,” states the announcement regarding the establishment of the donation reception center at this faculty.
Niš students in blockade this morning called on all colleagues and citizens to help people in the Kuršumlija and Toplica regions affected by large fires, not only with donations but also physically.
“If you have experience in firefighting or have undergone any training for handling such situations, if you have served in the military and are in good health – we appeal to you to respond and help the people of the Kuršumlija and Toplica regions, who are affected by large fires,” stated the Informal Group of Students in Niš.
The NGS called on all who can volunteer to help fight fires on the ground to contact the Emergency Situations Headquarters in Kuršumlija at 027 381383. Volunteers can leave their contact phone number at this number, and representatives of the Headquarters will call them to help when and where needed. The location of fires can also be reported to this number.
According to the latest information, approximately 620 fires have been registered in Serbia, and six people have been injured.
