In 12 elementary schools, 12 high schools, and one special school in Niš, members of the school boards have been dismissed and new ones appointed. Their appointments will be on the agenda of the next Assembly session.
According to Južne vesti, the opposition councilor group—comprised of the People’s Movement of Serbia, the Democratic Party, and the Free Citizens’ Movement—warns that the government is exercising political control over education by replacing school boards in 26 Niš schools. They state that new members are being installed to represent the local government, who will then pressure directors and other board members.
Before the next Assembly session, scheduled for September 9, a nominations committee meeting was held this morning with 53 items on its agenda. A large number of these items concerned the dismissal and appointment of school boards in a total of 26 schools.
New members of the school boards were appointed in the elementary schools “Car Konstantin,” “Dositej Obradović,” “Vožd Karađorđe,” “Stefan Nemanja,” “Učitelj Tasa,” “Dušan Radović,” “Bubanjski heroji,” “Branko Miljković,” “Vuk Karadžić,” “Radoje Domanović,” “Milan Rakić” in Medoševac, and “Branislav Nušić” in Donja Trnava.
Board members were also changed in the high schools “Bora Stanković,” “9. maj,” and “Stevan Sremac,” as well as in the following high schools: the Law and Business, Economic, Music, Art, Food and Chemical, Trade, Medical, and Fashion and Beauty schools, the “Mija Stanimirović” and “Nikola Tesla” electrical engineering schools, and the “Bubanj” Special School.
“Revenge of the Bad Students”
The opposition councilor group NPS-DS-PSG stated that “we are witnessing the collapse of the educational system, which is being directed from the top of the government,” and emphasized that they will vote against all proposals for the “government’s political takeover of schooling.”
“Anyone who is not suitable is either fired or dismissed, and we can see that in Niš, this revenge of the bad students is being carried out through the replacement of school board members. This is the revenge being carried out in Niš by Predrag Babović, a symbol of SNS corruption and a representative of the bad students who are carrying out this revenge on the educational system in Niš,” the councilor group’s statement said.
They are calling on citizens to stand with teachers and defend the independence of schools and education, and to participate as members of parent councils.
On the other hand, the official website of the City Assembly of Niš states that these dismissals and appointments to the school boards ensure the continuity of their work and the smooth functioning of the educational process. The chairman of the nominations committee, Milan Lazarević, who is also an SNS councilor, claims the same.
“Some were completely replaced because their terms expired, while in other cases, changes were made based on the proposals of councilor groups or parents, in accordance with the law, so that all institutions could function properly,” Lazarević explained.
