The Basic Court of the provisional institutions in Pristina today ordered 30-day detention for Serb M.Đ., who was arrested yesterday in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica on suspicion of allegedly committing war crimes against Albanian civilians in the municipality of Zvečan during the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija from 1998 to 1999, his lawyer Srđan Mitrović confirmed.

Mitrović stated that the prosecution charges his client with committing certain criminal acts as the commander of the Zvečan police station.

“He is charged with war crimes committed in 1998, one case in October, then two cases in 1999, in April and somewhere in late June 1999,” Mitrović said.

He added that the entire prosecution’s accusation is based on evidence gathered after 26 years.

“Evidence, meaning witness statements from 2024, were taken; memories fade, that kind of evidence is unreliable, and yet it was enough for the pre-trial judge to determine that there is reasonable suspicion for the commission of these criminal acts,” Mitrović stated.

He added that in the request for detention, the prosecutor stated that there was a risk of flight and that he would influence witnesses.

“The judge dismissed the part of the decision regarding influencing witnesses, but the part about the risk of flight remained, as he is a citizen of the Republic of Serbia. My client lives in Kosovska Mitrovica; he was employed at the Zvečan police station at that time. He is accused of being the commander of the Zvečan police station, which is not true,” the lawyer pointed out.

Mitrović announced that he would file an appeal against this decision and stated that there is no evidence to support the indictment.
