The major protest “Serbia, Can You Hear Us?” is being held this evening in Novi Sad, with support rallies scheduled in several other cities across Serbia. The gathering in Novi Sad began at 7 PM at the intersection of Stražilovska Street and Bulevar Cara Lazara. Strong police forces and first aid stations have been deployed on the campus of the University of Novi Sad. Several thousand people have arrived in the protest zone, while large columns had started from other parts of the city.

The reason for the protest, which was called by the students in blockade, is, as they state, the violation of the University’s autonomy and the presence of police in the buildings of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education. Students and professors will speak at the protest, and it has been announced that the anthem will also be played.

Students Demand an End to Violence

The gathering began at 7 PM, while the program, which includes speeches by students and professors from the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, started at 7:30 PM. The organizers announced that after the speeches conclude, the public will be informed about the protest’s next steps.

Students and citizens have been called to gather peacefully and to follow official channels for all information. Rallies have also been scheduled in Novi Pazar, Niš, Prokuplje, Kraljevo, Kragujevac, Valjevo, Užice, Prijepolje, and Leskovac.

A student in Novi Sad said at this evening’s protest that the autonomy of the university is being defended tonight.

“Tonight, we are defending what is most precious: freedom of speech and the autonomy of the university. In a place where thought, art, and critical spirit should flourish, a cordon of Gendarmerie has been placed. We know that the university belongs to students and professors, not the police,” the student said after 16 minutes of silence.

Dijana Hrka, the mother of Stefan Hrka, who was killed in the canopy collapse, is attending this evening’s protest in Novi Sad.

“It’s important for me to be here because of the students, because of the people, and because of everything that is happening, so that we too can see justice. We are here to protect our children,” Hrka said.

16 minutes of silence were also held for the victims of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad.
