The Rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan Đokić, addressed the Supreme Public Prosecutor, Zagorka Dolovac, regarding the testimonies of students who spoke about police brutality in the Government of Serbia building on August 15, requesting that the public prosecutor’s office take appropriate measures to establish the facts.
“Dear Supreme Public Prosecutor, on behalf of the academic community of the University of Belgrade, we seek answers, truth, and justice, and we appeal to your professional and personal conscience, convinced that you will act in accordance with the law and ethical principles,” states the letter sent by Rector Đokić on behalf of the Expanded Rector’s Collegium.
The Rector stated that the students’ testimonies have shaken the entire public and that establishing the truth about these events is a legal and moral obligation that must not be overlooked.
“The claims made by our students raise suspicions that serious criminal offenses were committed by authorized police officers. Every state that claims to be a state of law is obliged to take the actions prescribed by law to verify the basis of suspicion that such acts were committed. We strongly demand that the competent public prosecutor’s office take appropriate measures and actions, which will include issuing an order to the Internal Control Sector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to collect information, establish facts, and secure evidence,” requested the Expanded Rector’s Collegium.
They add that the testimonies of students and other citizens particularly concern the actions of high-ranking police officials, which “causes fear, insecurity, and indignation.”
The Rector also stated that the members of the collegium are unpleasantly surprised by the MUP’s statement, which denies the students’ testimonies without first establishing the factual situation within the procedure provided by law.
“No one, especially police officers, should be protected from investigation and accountability,” the Rector said.
