The President of the self-proclaimed Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, stated today that Serbia had actions on the border with Kosovo during May, and that Kosovo’s security institutions informed her of this, after which she contacted allies.
During a recent visit to Washington, Osmani confirmed statements by U.S. President Donald Trump that he prevented a possible escalation from Serbia in Kosovo in recent weeks.
“Immediately upon receiving that information, I had meetings with the security institutions that report to me as president. We ensured that every institution in Kosovo was adequately mobilized for the defense of the country,” she said at a press conference in Pristina.
Osmani said that some of the information is confidential but was shared with allies to prevent a security escalation. Serbia has previously rejected Osmani’s statements.
“Threats from Serbia are Continuous”
“I assure the citizens of Kosovo that there is no reason for concern or panic, because our institutions are up to the task when it comes to protecting borders and the security of all our citizens. Threats from Serbia are continuous, but our institutions have everything under control,” the Kosovo president said.
When asked about accusations from Richard Grenell, the U.S. President’s Special Envoy for Special Missions, that Osmani was manipulating Trump’s statements, the president said she “only thanked President Trump for his role in preserving peace and security in the world and in the Balkans.”
“I did not interpret President Trump’s statements; rather, I said how I understood them as the President of Kosovo. If the position of the United States of America is different, I believe you can address them, but we highly appreciate President Trump’s role as a peacemaker, day and night, in the world. We highly value that contribution. I do not wish to comment on how others interpreted my statement,” she said.
Trump has mentioned Kosovo and Serbia several times in recent weeks, stating that he prevented a conflict between them, but without providing details or specifying the timeframe when this occurred.
