Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban extended support to the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, after he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. On his official Twitter account, Orban wrote that the left worldwide uses courts as a weapon to destroy conservative leaders.
“Now sentenced to 27 years in prison, the case against President Boslonaro is not justice, but a political witch hunt. We stand with him against this undemocratic persecution,” Orban stated.
With this tweet, Orban clearly expressed the view that the verdict against Bolsonaro was politically, not legally, motivated, and gave him his support at a time when he is facing a lengthy sentence.
The Supreme Court of Brazil’s chamber on Thursday sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison for planning a coup d’état to remain in power after his defeat in the 2022 elections.
Bolsonaro was accused of participating in an armed criminal organization, attempting to violently abolish democracy, organizing a coup, and damaging government property and protected cultural assets.
Bolsonaro’s lawyers stated that he is innocent on all counts and made the claim that several procedural errors were made during his trial.
