Hackers linked to the Chinese government targeted the phone communications of former President Donald Trump and vice presidential candidate Jay D. Vance as part of a much broader effort of cyber espionage against U.S. officials, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN.
They indicated that Chinese hackers also targeted senior officials in the Biden administration.
U.S. officials informed Trump’s campaign this week that he and Vance are among a group of individuals whose phones were targeted by Chinese hackers.
It was not immediately clear what data the hackers may have accessed.
The U.S. government is investigating unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by hackers linked to the People’s Republic of China, the FBI and the U.S. Cybersecurity Agency announced today, without providing further details.
